Position PurposeSleep Number is a consumer-driven innovation company with a mission to individualize sleep experiences. In order to deliver on our customer promise, we will be evolving our Supply Chain network including advancing our component manufacturing and assembly capabilities with focus on process automation. Sleep Number is seeking a highly qualified technical Senior Manager to lead the manufacturing engineering organization and develop and execute multi-year technical strategy to advance capability of manufacturing processes. This highly visible role will report to the Director of Manufacturing and will lead an engineering team across multiple sites within a matrix organization. This role will lead the development of the engineering team to effectively collaborate within Lean High Performing work teams.Plan, design and coordinate the implementation of process and equipment improvements for new product programs, quality, safety and efficiency.Involved in development and startup of new automated assembly equipmentPrimary ResponsibilitiesIn collaboration with Director Manufacturing and plant leaders, develop and execute manufacturing engineering technical strategy across all manufacturing sites in support of overall supply chain network evolution strategy.Conduct external benchmarking to assess existing manufacturing technologies that can be leveraged in manufacturing processes as key input to technical strategy.Collaborate with Product and R&D on new product development initiatives; ensure product development is aligned with technical strategy to maximize return on invested capital.Drive process stability and consistency across all manufacturing sites by ensuring all process changes including implementation of new automation and tooling/fixture changes are validated and standards are established and documented prior to transfer to manufacturing.Develop subject matter experts for each manufacturing process who are responsible for ensuring work instructions and standard work are documented for each process step.Develop engineering team to work effectively within Lean High Performing work teams with focus on driving to root cause and problem solving for key process flow issues to ensure daily goals are achieved.Develop engineers to effectively lead process continuous improvement projects driven by business goals for safety, quality, delivery, and cost in collaboration with manufacturing team ensuring projects are complete on time and within budget.Collaborate with finance to build business case and budget for capital projects; Identify vendors for needed equipment to support changes and manage the procurement of equipment, collaborate with sourcing as needed. Develops project objectives by reviewing project proposals and plans and conferring with management.Determines project specifications by studying product design, customer requirements, and performance standards.Completes technical studies and prepares cost estimates.Position RequirementsFive+ years' experience in engineering or maintenance management, preferably leading engineering, or manufacturing across multiple sites.Experience leading complex multi-site projects in a distributed supply chain environment required.Demonstrated experience leveraging lean tools to eliminate waste and enhance customer and shareholder value.Demonstrated ability to understand complex problems, rapidly identify solutions and communicate to all levels of leadership and partners.Experience in one or more of the following adjacent disciplines: manufacturing, engineering, logistics/warehousing.Minimum BA/BS degree in business or engineering.Preferred MBA or Masters in Engineering.Proficient in Vision, Microsoft Office and MS ProjectAutoCad or ProE experienceTechnical report writing and verbal skills.Travel as required Working Conditions Working in a manufacturing plant environment, with exposure to material handling equipment, dust and moderate noise, and use of personal protective equipment depending on specific project work.Plant operation involves 2 shifts, including some weekends. Work hours may vary depending on project work.Must be able to spend a significant amount of time on a production floor. Job may require reaching, bending, stooping, working at elevation, and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.Some travel (including air travel) will be required, to suppliers and other corporate facilities in South Carolina and Minnesota.
