About The Role

Job Description

The Senior Data Engineer will provide data pipeline expertise and business intelligence leadership to guide reporting implementations led by business units within the Verisk Insurance Solutions - Claims (VIS-C) division that service internal and external customers. The successful candidate understands the full BI stack from the frontend BI tool capabilities to the backend data pipelines and data structures that support the reporting systems. In this hands-on role, he/she will be responsible for collaborating with product owners, tackling new or difficult technical problems, helping define best practices, mentoring data engineers, conducting data model design and code reviews. In addition, he/she will help evaluate new technologies and frameworks to drive innovation and satisfy the growing needs of internal and external customers

About The Day-to-Day Responsibilities Of The Role

  • Pipeline Development - Lead the development of pipelines and processes used to manage data using AWS services like Lambda, Glue, Step Functions, S3, and database platforms like Snowflake. Including the standardization of existing data pipelines.
  • BI Solutions - Design, review, and build Kimball style data models for business intelligence reporting systems like Power BI and ThoughtSpot. Understand BI tool analysis capabilities and how they implement row-level security and other run-time filters to ensure data model designs align to such requirements.
  • Collaboration - Work closely with product owners to understand and refine new feature requests requiring data pipeline and/or frontend reporting work and act as a trusted technical advisor to indicate the proper approach.
  • Communication - Ability to communicate technical ideas in terms product owners and non-technical users can understand.
  • Architecture - Lead the conceptualization, design, and maintenance of data pipelines ensuring standard practices are followed for logging, monitoring, alerting and security controls are in place.
  • Data Security - Understand Verisk data security policies and controls and design and implement ways to comply with the policies.
  • Apply Expertise - Work across projects to assist in resolving technical problems and keep projects on track.
  • Mentoring - Teach other team members about data architecture, and act as a consultant for developers who need help with data solutions.
  • Best Practices - Discuss ideas for maturing the data engineering practices and make plans with leadership to implement those improvements.
    • BS or MS degree in Computer Science or Information Technology.
    • 8+ years of Data Warehousing experience.
    • 6+ years of experience designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining cloud data pipelines (ETL/ELT solutions).
    • Strong knowledge of performance tuning concepts and the ability to design efficient, highly performant data pipelines in SQL and Python.
    • Strong knowledge of Dimensional Modeling following Kimball design patterns and methodologies (6+ years)
    • Extensive experience building data pipelines using a variety of data sources (RDBMS, NoSQL, REST API's, flat files etc.)
    • Experience working with Snowflake (or equivalent) and its data security features.
    • Experience working with tokenized data.
    • Experience working with languages such as Python, JavaScript, C# or Java.
    • Working knowledge of development standards/best practices with the ability to follow established coding patterns.
    • Working knowledge of object-oriented programing and design patterns.
    • Proficiency with traditional ETL tools (SSIS, etc.)
    • Proficiency with version control systems (GIT)
    • Proficiency with database modeling tools (SqlDBM, etc.)
    • Ability to work within an agile
    • Experience building/working with MDM solutions where entity resolution is employed is a plus.
    • Experience building/working with CI/CD pipelines.
    • Experience using AWS serverless services such as Lambda, Glue, S3, DynamoDB, and Step Functions is a plus.
    • Experience with one or more Business Intelligence platforms such as ThoughtSpot, Spotfire, Tableau, Power BI is a plus.
    • Insurance industry experience is a plus.
